Welcome to Africa

For many hunters, an African safari is more than a vacation. It is a dream. It is something imagined for years—sometimes decades. The thought of watching the sun rise over the bushveld, hearing kudu move through the trees at first light, following fresh buffalo tracks with your professional hunter, and sitting beside a fire under the African stars is something that never leaves a hunter’s mind. For many, the dream starts long before the booking. But for many hunters, that same dream is delayed by uncertainty.

Questions begin to pile up.

  • How does safari planning work?
  • How safe is South Africa?
  • How do I travel with firearms?
  • Can I bring my wife?
  • What does it actually cost?
  • How do I get my trophies home?

At African Game Hunts, we believe your first safari should feel exciting—not overwhelming. That is why we created this guide. We specialize in helping American hunters plan premium African safaris that are seamless, personalized, and unforgettable. From the first conversation to the day your trophies arrive home, we guide every step. Because this is not simply a hunt. It is a legacy experience. And for most hunters… their first safari becomes the first of many.

Welcome to Africa

Why Africa Is Unlike Anywhere Else

WHY HUNT AFRICA?
Why Africa Is Unlike Anywhere Else

There is no hunting destination in the world like Africa. It is not simply the number of species available. It is the complete experience. In one safari, you may pursue: Greater Kudu, Gemsbok, Cape Buffalo, Eland, Zebra, Nyala, Wildebeest, Impala, Sable, Waterbuck, Warthog, Springbok, And many more.

But what makes Africa unforgettable is what happens between the hunts. Luxury lodges. World-class hospitality. Campfire stories. Sunrises over the bushveld. Wildlife everywhere. Family memories. Big Five encounters. Private reserves. True adventure. Africa is not just about pulling the trigger. It is about the full experience. That is why so many hunters say: “I wish I had done this sooner.” And almost every hunter says: “I’m coming back.”

Which Safari Is Right for You?

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SAFARI
Which Safari Is Right for You?

Not every safari should look the same. The best safari is the one built around your goals. Your species. Your family. Your dream.

Plains Game Safari

This is the ideal first safari for most American hunters. Popular species include: Greater Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra, Nyala, Impala, Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Springbok, Warthog and Eland. Plains game safaris offer exceptional trophy quality, incredible diversity, and excellent value. For many hunters, this is the perfect first step into Africa.

Dangerous Game Safari

This is Africa at its most serious. Examples include: Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Crocodile, Hippo, Elephant (where legal) and Lion (where legal and ethical). Dangerous game requires preparation, proper rifles, experienced professional hunters, and the right safari structure. This is not trophy collecting. This is legacy hunting.

Bow Hunting Safari

Africa is one of the finest bowhunting destinations in the world. Dedicated blinds, waterhole setups, and exceptional animal movement create incredible opportunities. Excellent species include: Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, Warthog, Nyala and Buffalo (advanced hunters). Bow hunters often fall in love with Africa faster than anyone.

Family Safari

Many hunters travel with spouses, children, and non-hunting guests. These safaris combine: Hunting, Luxury lodges, Photo safaris, Fishing adventures, Wine country tours, Spa experiences, Cultural excursions and Coastal extensions. This is often where the real magic happens. Africa becomes a family memory—not just a hunting trip.

Step-by-Step Safari Planning

HOW SAFARI PLANNING WORKS
Step-by-Step Safari Planning

Planning your safari begins with one simple conversation. We start by understanding: What species do you want to hunt? What style of safari do you prefer? Are you bringing family? What time of year works best? What level of luxury do you want? What is your realistic budget? From there, we help build the right safari. Not a generic package. A customized experience.

Step 1 — Safari Consultation

We discuss your goals, expectations, and dream species list. This is where the right safari begins.

Step 2 — Property Selection

Different species require different properties. Karoo. Limpopo. Bushveld. Private reserves. Dangerous game concessions. We match your goals to the right location.

Step 3 — Date Selection

Species timing matters. We help build your safari around prime hunting months—not random calendar dates. This dramatically improves success.

Step 4 — Flights + Firearm Preparation

We assist with: International flightsDomestic transfersCharter planningFirearm permitsRifle rental options. This removes stress before travel begins.

Step 5 — Arrival + Safari Experience

Airport pickup. Camp arrival. Professional hunter introductions. Range check. Daily hunt planning. This is where Africa becomes real.

Step 6 — Trophy Export + Return Home

Even after the hunt ends, we continue guiding: Taxidermy, Shipping, Export permits and U.S. customs clearance. Your safari does not end at the airport.

The Best Safaris Are Planned Early

WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK?
The Best Safaris Are Planned Early

We recommend booking: 6–12 Months in Advance. Why? Because the best safari dates disappear first. Especially: May through August. Peak season books early. Planning ahead allows time for: Prime species — timing — Passport preparation — Firearm paperwork — Flights — Charter planning — Family scheduling — Trophy planning — Financial preparation. Early planning creates better hunts. Late planning creates compromises.

When Is the Best Time to Hunt Africa?

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO HUNT
When Is the Best Time to Hunt Africa?

Prime hunting season generally runs: March through September with peak conditions often between: May and August. This is when: Temperatures are cooler, Vegetation is thinner, Animal movement improves, Visibility increases and Rut activity strengthens. However: Every Species Is Different. Kudu timing differs from Nyala. Buffalo timing differs from Springbok. That is why serious hunters plan around: Species First —not flights. We also provide: Best Months to Hunt Each African Species Guide, because timing changes everything.

Getting to Africa

FLIGHTS + TRAVEL LOGISTICS
Getting to Africa

Most American hunters fly into: O.R. Tambo International Airport. This is the primary international gateway for most safaris. Depending on your safari location, we may also use: Cape Town International Airport, King Shaka International Airport and Private charter flights.

We coordinate: Airport pickup, Domestic transfers, Charter connections, VIP firearm assistance and Camp transfers. You are never navigating Africa alone.

Bringing Your Rifle to Africa

FIREARMS + RIFLE TRAVEL
Bringing Your Rifle to Africa

This is usually the biggest concern for first-time hunters. The truth? It is far easier than most people expect. You typically need: Valid U.S. Passport, U.S. Customs Form 4457, Flight itinerary, Firearm serial numbers, Airline compliance paperwork and a Temporary South African firearm permit. We help guide every step. Many hunters also choose: Premium Rifle Rental. This simplifies travel and removes airline firearm stress. Both options work extremely well.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

WHAT TO PACK
Pack Smart, Not Heavy

You do not need to overpack. Most safari camps provide daily laundry service. Focus on essentials. Clothing — Neutral hunting clothes — Lightweight layers — Warm jacket for cold mornings — Comfortable boots — Hat — Gloves for winter hunts — Gear — Binoculars — Rangefinder — Camera — Chargers + adapters — Soft rifle case — Shooting stick familiarity — Documents — Passport — Firearm paperwork — Flight confirmations — Insurance details — Medical information

Simple preparation makes safari smoother.

Health Preparation

HEALTH + VACCINATIONS
Health Preparation

Most hunters require very little medical preparation for South Africa. Routine recommendations include: Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Standard travel vaccinations. Some northern areas may require malaria awareness depending on season and location. Much of the Karoo is non-malaria. We always recommend speaking with your physician before departure. Peace of mind matters.

Real Safari Cost Expectations

WHAT DOES A SAFARI COST?
Real Safari Cost Expectations

This depends on: Species hunted, Number of hunting days, Dangerous game vs plains game, Number of guests, Luxury level of accommodations, Charter flights and Trophy fees. Typical first-time plains game safaris often begin around: $8,000–$15,000+. Dangerous game safaris are significantly higher. Cape Buffalo and premium DG hunts are often much more. The goal is not cheap. The goal is unforgettable. We build the right safari around your goals—not generic pricing.

Safari Is Not Just for Hunters

BRINGING YOUR SPOUSE + FAMILY
Safari Is Not Just for Hunters

Many hunters say: “I’d love to go… but my wife won’t enjoy it.” This is almost always wrong. Many wives love Africa even more than the hunters. Non-hunting guests enjoy: Big Five photo safaris, Wine country tours, Luxury spas, Fishing adventures, Private reserve drives, Sightseeing excursions, Cultural experiences and Luxury lodge relaxation. Safari becomes: A Shared Family Experience —not just a hunting trip. This is often the reason hunters return again.

This Is Not Camping

LUXURY LODGE EXPECTATIONS
This Is Not Camping

Many first-time hunters imagine safari camps incorrectly. This is not rough camping. This is luxury African hospitality. Expect: Private en-suite rooms, Exceptional meals, Firepit evenings, Full staff hospitality, Daily laundry service, Premium lodge experiences and Incredible wildlife views. You wake up in Africa. You return each evening to comfort. This is why safari becomes addictive.

Bringing Your Trophies Home

TROPHY SHIPPING + TAXIDERMY
Bringing Your Trophies Home

After your hunt, trophies are professionally prepared and exported. This includes: Field preparation, Skinning and caping, Dip & pack services, Export permits, Veterinary inspections, Shipping logistics and U.S. customs clearance. Trophies can be sent: To your preferred U.S. taxidermist, Directly to your home, To trusted taxidermy partners. We guide the entire process. From the field… to your trophy room.
